Nearly 13,000 people stayed in the emergency shelter and transitional housing programs that participate in Minnesota's Homeless Management Information System during the 12 months from October 2007 to September 2008. Collectively these organizations provide about 3,400 beds per night designated for people experiencing homelessness, which is about 57 percent of the state's total capacity of approximately 6,000 emergency and transitional beds. This report is based on aggregate data submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in conjunction with their Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, and provides information about the numbers and characteristics of people residing in emergency shelter and transitional housing throughout the state. A companion report presents detailed tables for each of Minnesota's 13 Continuum of Care regions.
