Counting on shelter

Emergency housing use in Ramsey County, 2006 and 2007
February 2009: Craig Helmstetter, Emily Warren

Following trends started in 2004 and 2005, adult and family shelter use was up in Ramsey County in 2006 and 2007 to the highest level ever observed in the 17 years of this project. While the total number of people using shelter was similar to previous years, average days in shelter reached nearly 30 days. Additionally, "long-term" shelter users made up about a quarter of all adult shelter users in both 2006 and 2007, and these adults used about half of all shelter bed-nights provided in these years.
