Monica Idzelis

Monica manages a range of research and evaluation projects, with a special focus on programs serving children and families.  Her research work has encompassed a range of topics, including parenting and parent education, children’s mental health, child welfare, domestic violence, and substance use.  She also has a background and special interest in parent education and has been involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of parent education programs and curricula.

Prior to joining Wilder in 2005, Monica coordinated and assisted in the development of a parent education program at the University of Connecticut, facilitated parent education classes, and conducted research examining child development in cross-cultural contexts.

Monica has a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Connecticut, an M.A. in Psychology from Wake Forest University, and a B.A. in Psychology and English from St. Olaf College.

Recent projects

  • A study examining the impact of MFIP Family Connections, a pilot program being implemented in eight Minnesota counties which connects MFIP recipients with community based organizations with the goal of reducing child maltreatment
  • An outcome evaluation of Practical Parent Education, a multi-site parent education program, which includes an assessment of the impact of a parenting curriculum on children and parents 
  • An evaluation of services and activities provided through the MN Children’s Trust Fund, including a focus on the work of Strengthening Families grantees, which aim to build family strengths and reduce child abuse
  • A statewide, multi-site youth substance use prevention program funded by the Minnesota Department of Human Services
  • An evaluation of Strong and Peaceful Families, a program which provides intensive case management and other support services to families involved in domestic violence
  • Foundations for Success Initiative, a five-year initiative funded by the Knight Foundation that aimed to improve the accessibility and quality of mental health services for children age 0-5 in Ramsey County
