Research Scientist

For more than 15 years, Edith has conducted research and evaluation in the areas of education and human services, with a focus on school success, especially for vulnerable populations. Her work includes outcome evaluations, longitudinal studies, and demonstration project studies for programs aimed at reducing the achievement gap, ranging from early childhood programs to elementary and middle schools.
Edith has a Ph.D. in human development and family studies from Iowa State University, an M.S. in child development, and a B.A. in psychology.
Recent projects
- Evaluation of Project Early Kindergarten, a preschool program for 4 year-olds aims to improve the school-readiness of Saint Paul children and help close the achievement gap through offering high-quality educational experiences for preschool children. The program targets services to English Language Learners, low-income children, and children needing Special Education services.
- Evaluation of Freedom School and Project SPIRIT, summer and after-school programs serving African American students. The programs are funded by a Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.
- Evaluation of Achievement Plus, a multi-partner initiative to develop community schools that incorporate health, oral health, mental health, social, recreational and educational enrichment programs in an effort to improve student achievement.
- Evaluation of Early Reading First which is designed to prepare children to enter kindergarten with the necessary skills for reading success.
- Evaluation of Paul and Sheila Wellstone elementary school's parent involvement project. The purpose of the project is to support families' transitions into kindergarten and through elementary school.
- Evaluation of a Saint Paul Public School counseling program designed to improve the academic achievement, attendance, and behavioral outcomes for students at three elementary schools in St. Paul.
- Evaluation of the Bright Smiles- Partnership for Improving Children's Oral Health, a four-year study to improve the oral health of young children and pregnant women in Ramsey, Hennepin, and Dakota Counties.
