Homelessness to Security

Double the value of your gift to Wilder's Supportive Housing Services, thanks to a match from the Frey Foundation.

The match ends June 30, 2013.

Jackson Street VillageDenise had to do it, to save herself and her child. She left her abusive husband, despite the fact that, without him, she would be homeless. With a young child, no job experience, no high school diploma, and little rental history, finding a place to live was not going to be easy.

Like more than 6,500 people who are homeless each night in the Twin Cities, she didn’t know where she would sleep.

Then, she found help from the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation. Today, thanks to a $25,000 challenge grant from the Frey Foundation, you can double the value of your gift, while you invest in Saint Paul’s future.

First, a Wilder housing specialist helped her locate safe housing, negotiate a fair lease, and provide an inspection to ensure the apartment was safe and sound. She also helped Denise obtain a rental subsidy, making the two-bedroom apartment affordable for the long run.

Next, she worked closely with a Wilder case manager, who helped her apply for jobs. Within weeks—she was employed full-time, at $9.00 per hour.

Today, Denise makes enough money to support herself and her child without cash assistance. She still meets with her case manager regularly, and they are working to change the behavior patterns that led to her abusive relationship. Denise is studying for her GED, and she has only one class left to complete. After graduation, she will pursue her dream job, helping others as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Your year-end gift will help provide families like Denise’s with safe and clean housing and essential services that move them from homelessness toward self-sufficiency.
