Leadership Cohort

Our Neighborhood Leadership Program is an in-depth program for leaders engaged or planning to engage in the community. Participants in this program are eager to connect with a diverse learning community to explore community involvement and develop leadership skills to take effective action. This program typically brings together 30 people from a wide diversity of ages, cultural backgrounds, and levels of experience.

Why Join NLP?

By participating in the program, you will:
  • Explore further opportunities for neighborhood involvement and personal growth
  • Engage and connect with a diverse learning community of leaders and changemakers in Saint Paul, who become resources, mentors, allies, and a network for your work
  • Develop skills to work effectively with others from a broad range of backgrounds, ages and cultures
  • Examine and cultivate personal leadership
  • Expand your knowledge of community history to inform your actions today

Who Participates?

Participants come from a variety of formal and informal community-based organizations. Several organizations such as the Saint Paul Police Department, Neighborhood Development Alliance and multiple District Council and community development organizations have regularly sponsored individuals to participate in the program.
We encourage people from diverse gender, geography, age, cultural and ethnic backgrounds to apply.

How the Program Works

Participants engage in twice-monthly sessions over six months to further individual and group knowledge, practical skills, and new connections needed for effective community leadership. Topics have included:
  • Personal values and community work
  • Working inclusively in communities
  • Intercultural communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Navigating city and county government
  • Participatory meeting facilitation
  • The impact and role of community history on current work
A volunteer community coach is paired with each NLP participant to share his or her journey as attentive listeners, sounding boards, and reflective companions.
