By providing intensive, on-site, supportive services, we help to stabilize and strengthen families by:
Funding for supportive services at Jackson Street Village is sought each year through private foundations and donors. Support services cost $7,100 per year per family. Even this high cost represents considerable savings over the cost of homeless families cycling through shelters and receiving other expensive emergency public services.
Additionally, the Mobile Resource Center is a pilot program to be launched in the summer of 2006. This program will teach basic computer and internet skills to residents of Wilder's supportive housing sites with the goals of increasing access to information through technology and developing skills to help eliminate barriers to employment.
Jackson Street Village was developed through a collaboration between RS Eden and the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation. The American Lung Association of Minnesota Health House and the University of Minnesota also partnered on the project.
To help reduce respiratory infections and improve the overall health of tenants, each building was constructed with materials that reduce indoor particulates and technology that increases the circulation of clean air. These features were revolutionary in affordable housing -- the first multi-family Health House in the country.
The buildings were constructed using an aggressive thermal moisture management system on the walls which contributes to an air-tight, energy efficient shell. This system not only aided in control of moisture and indoor air quality, but was enhanced by a geo-thermal heat pump system that reduces energy consumption.
All systems have been monitored and tested by Health House and the University of Minnesota Cold Climate Housing Program to document the buildings performance over a two year period. The results will be published to aid in the construction of future high-performing affordable multi-family housing.
Rebuild America, a program of the U.S. Department of Energy, has featured Jackson Street Village as a success story in building energy efficient affordable housing.
