Ellen specializes in topics related to the well-being of families and children, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Her research projects include program evaluation, needs assessment, and policy analysis.

Ellen has over 10 years experience in applied social science research. Before coming to Wilder Research Center in 1997, she worked as a research associate and policy analyst for the Minnesota Council on Crime and Justice. She holds an M.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in History from Carleton College, and has taken advanced coursework in research design and statistics at the University of Minnesota and the Summer Institute in Survey Research at the University of Michigan.

Recent projects

• Evaluate the effectiveness of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities' four Centers of Excellence. These projects, focused on high-demand industries, are intended to coordinate and strengthen education and training programs across multiple MnSCU institutions, align closely with industry needs, and work with K-12 schools to promote student interest and preparation, to ensure a quality workforce for Minnesota.
• Consultant to the "Shifting Gears Initiative" of the Governor's Workforce Development Council to redesign the state's vision, strategies, and services for low-wage, low-skill workers.
• Formative evaluation of a three-year NSF grant to Normandale Community College to enhance the preparation of elementary and middle school science and math teachers, with a special focus on recruiting and supporting future teachers from underserved populations
• Evaluation of The McKnight Foundation's Families Forward program of grants for training and education to help low-wage working parents move into better jobs
• Evaluation of the Cargill Foundation/Minnesota Humanities Commission initiative to introduce the Core Knowledge curriculum in a variety of Minneapolis-area elementary schools
• A study that assesses the condition of homelessness in Omaha, NE and develops recommendations for services and funding for funders, service providers, and advocates
• Evaluation of a project to help informal child care providers understand the effects of media (especially TV and video games) on young children and learn ways to better supervise children's media exposure.
